Free economic zones in the TOT are free for the Kremlin’s economic crimes

The Russian regime has not been able to overcome the consequences of the economic decline of the occupied territories, which began as a result of the full-scale invasion. A significant part of the economically active population has left the TOT, many infrastructure facilities have been destroyed, and the collaborators’ business capacities are not enough to fill the budget. Therefore, the occupied territories have become deeply subsidized. It’s a kind of black hole for the Kremlin.

To “overcome” the crisis, Russia introduced a so-called “free economic zone” in the TOT. And, of course, enterprises close to the occupation administrations become residents of such “zones”.

Recently, another 37 enterprises that were nationalized or just taken from Ukraine or pro-Ukrainian owners have become residents of the free economic zone in Donetsk region. This is mostly done to create the appearance of regional development and to siphon money from the Kremlin. So, under the guise of economic development, the occupiers redistribute cash flows to the companies they need to enrich themselves.

Meanwhile, the prices of food and essential goods in the temporarily occupied territories are steadily rising.  And no amount of regulation by the occupiers helps.
